Hints
for getting school year started on right track
By Lauren Naughton
School year not going quite as planned? It's not too late! Here
are some tips to get your school year on the right track!
School:
Use class time wisely; during class instead of getting bored and
doodling, jot notes on what the teacher is saying during class;
taking notes will help you understand the class material better.
When teachers give you class time to work on assignments, use it
to try and get work done. Focus any discussions on the work being
done instead of gossiping.
Ask Questions! If you are feeling overwhelmed by homework or studying
for a test, don't be afraid to ask for help. Most teachers are more
than willing to help you understand the class material better. If
you are confused by the teacher's help, try forming study groups
with people in your class.
Stay Organized! Use your planner to write down assignments so you'll
be able to remember them more easily and keep track of important
due dates.
Home:
Prioritize! Before you jump into your routine, ask yourself what
is most important and get started on it right away.
Create a positive working environment: Do homework in a quiet,
clutter-free place where you will be able to work without interruption.
Get rid of distractions (such as cell phones) and avoid studying
in an area will you will be tempted to watch T.V. You can also put
on some music to help you study and concentrate.
Manage your time: Homework is hard to get done when you try to
do it all at once. (especially if it's late at night). Instead of
stressing yourself out trying to get all of your homework done at
once, try to get done each subject a little at a time. Dedicate
a set amount of time for each subject, and then take a break for
ten minutes or so after your set time is up. Use this time to exercise,
eat a snack or take a cat-nap.
Save computer work for last: Facebook, Myspace, and the internet
in general can be major distractions for students. Get other homework
done first, and then work on the computer.
Take care of yourself! It is important not to get run-down during
the school year. Getting plenty of rest (about 8 hours of sleep)
and eating breakfast every day helps you focus during class, and
helps you do better on tests.
Life:
Get involved! Going to school events, games and getting involved
in clubs and service projects are not only fun, but are also extremely
rewarding.
Keep a positive attitude! This will help in all situations that
you will face this year; whether its academics, sports, or friends.
