Mrs. Braden: Bishop Kelly's outstanding computer teacher

By Emily Reeping

Contrary to reality, most students don't think teachers have lives outside of school.
What we fail to realize, though, is that teachers all had lives before any of us were even born. They are here after having had so many experiences that our lives look dull and incomplete. One of our own teachers here at BK, Deana Braden, is living proof of this.

Mrs. Braden was born in the small town of Rigby and grew up on a farm in this little rural municipality located in Eastern Idaho. She went to elementary and middle school at the local schools and high school at Rigby High School.

While in high school, Mrs. Braden was highly involved in the music program. She was selected to sing in their elite choir group, the Troy Lairs. Every year they would put on fall and spring productions. The fall one was a small theatrical performance while the spring production was a big musical. Their music director was from New York and highly involved in music there. Because of this, the Troy Lairs of Rigby High School were well known around Idaho and even went on tour a few times travelling all over Idaho and part of Oregon.

Mrs. Braden was also caught up in her high school's business electives. One of the classes she took was a shorthand class, which she was very good at. She would attend competitions for accounting, typing, and shorthand. One year she managed to win a scholarship for her shorthand skills. This allowed her to skip some classes in college that would have been wastes of time because she would have been so far ahead.

For college, Mrs. Braden went to Rick's College, which is now known as BYU Idaho. After her two years there, she transferred over to BYU in Utah. She majored in business education. When she graduated, she received the honor of the Outstanding Business Student award.

After her college graduation, Mrs. Braden got married to her college sweetheart and they moved to Boise. After they moved, she got a job at Mountain Bell, which is currently known as Qwest, and eventually became a Vice President. Although she enjoyed her job there, she took a six month leave of absence to have her first child.
During the six months she was away from Mountain Bell, her husband decided to go back and take two more years of college, so they moved back to Utah for two more years. They moved back to Boise in 1981 and that August Mrs. Braden landed her first job t Bishop Kelly where her brother in-law was a student teacher.

During her first year here, Mrs. Braden taught accounting, business law, and consumer math. The following fall she did not return, however in December, she came to fill in for the computer teacher who never came back. Mrs. Braden has been involved in BK's computer program ever since. She also has a certification in reading, so she taught freshman reading for seven years and currently is the teacher of the reading and study skills class.

Being a teacher at a high school certainly keeps Mrs. Braden busy; however she still finds time for doing a lot of service at her church. She is currently the president of her church's Relief Society, which is a society made for the women of the church.
One of her passions is hanging out with her family and doing activities with them. She has four children; three girls and one boy, two of which were born before her job at BK and two after. She also has three grandchildren, who she loves dearly.
Mrs. Braden also greatly enjoys reading and watching movies with her friends. Her favorite book genres are historical fiction and mystery. Apart from that, she and her husband are avid Survivor fans. They have seen every episode and always look forward to the upcoming ones.

Just about every student in Bishop Kelly will have Mrs. Braden as a teacher at least once. She teaches the computer applications classes that everyone is required to have to graduate. Whether you have her for one semester or more because you take more of her classes, just about everyone has a chance to have the fun experience of getting to know Mrs. Braden and her fun, caring, and light personality.
