New schedule raises questions and eyebrows

By Lauren Kosydar

Students and faculty , met the new school year with a new schedule that has raised a few questions and more than a few eyebrows from students and faculty alike as to why the reasons for the change.
KnightBeat sat down with Bishop Kelly Principal Bob Wehde to gain some insight into the reasons for the new schedule.

KnightBeat: What is the faculty doing during the morning of late starts rather than teaching the first hour?
Mr. Wehde: The faculty comes in the same time they usually do, but instead of teaching class the first hour, they are working on planning and launching blackboard and to collaborate to better serve the students. We want to get to the point where every teacher must stay until 3:30 to give students available time after school to help with any lost questions.

KnightBeat: Will SSR days ever be brought back.
Mr. Wehde: I don't know. We had to take them out because our schedule was getting too busy.

KnightBeat: A lot of students were asking the question last year for SSR, turning it into SSS (Silent Sustained Study).
Mr. Wehde: No, we wouldn't be able to do that, we would have to expand the school day and that's no good for anybody.

KnightBeat: Will the schedule used in 2007-2008, that started in the spring with the late starts Monday and early release Fridays, take place at all this year.
Mr. Wehde: No, I don't see that happening. We did that because of the spring sports, the schedules for most of these activities were conflicting with the school hours, when it came to the end of the day, a good portion of our student body was gone. We thought it would only be right to incorporate the schedule that year.

With that, we are given the general insight on the reasons for different schedule changes. The 2009-2010 school year schedules are already in the mix. Students can look forward to late starts every Friday staying, for our benefit and the staffs' as well.
