BK Water Polo wins state championship!

By Christine Vaughan

After a season of dedication and hard work, the Bishop Kelly water polo team was ready to dominate in its state tournament on Saturday , November 7th. The team had been prepping all season by practice, watching film, and creating strategic plays. Captain James Marria and co-captain Cary Richelieu led the team with their enthusiastic attitudes and committed spirits. Will Jones coached the 25 Knights, the largest team in the state.

The Knights played their first game against Hillcrest and easily secured a victory with a final score of 16-1, Hillcrest's only point being off of a penalty shot. Their next two games also slid by easily and by winning these they took the state title, but still had to play a final exhibition game.

It was a close game all the way through, with the Knights always behind by a little. It was tied at 7-7 until the combined Capital and Timberline team pulled ahead. The Capital/Timberline team was no doubt heavily reliant on their two Italian exchange students, who were quite experienced in the sport. The game was a nail biter to the end, and although the final score was 11-9, the Knights still held their heads high as they were awarded the well deserved title of State Champions. Good job BK!
